INTEL’S NEW ENTEPRISE-CLASS PROCESSOR OFFERING IS THE XEON
5500 processor series. The new enterprise-class chips are designed to automatically
Adjust to specified energy usage levels and speed while delivering great efficiency at reduced electricity costs.

The Xeon 5500 series, previously codenamed ‘Nehalem-EP’, offers several technologies such as Intel Turbo Boost Technology, Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, and integrated power gates, which have been designed to improve system speed and versatility. The next-generation Intel Virtualization Technology (VT), through extended page tables, allows the system to adapt to a broad range of workloads.

The series features processors with clock speeds ranging from 1.86GHz to 3.2GHz and can support DDR3 memory with speeds ranging between 800 MHz to 1333 MHz. Each processor contains up to 8 MB of level of 3 cache. The processor features the Turbo Boost Technology which is designed to increase system performance based on the user’s workload and environment, by dynamically boosting the clock speed of one or more of the individual processing cores.

The series offers automated energy efficiency enhancements, which include a processor idle power level of only 10 watts, promising to the previous generation. New integrated power gates, based on the Intel’s unique high-k metal gate technology, allow idle cores to power down independently. The Xeon 5500 series feature up to 15 automated operating states designed for improved chip power management by adjusting system power consumption based on real-time throughput and without sacrificing performance.

The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series ranges in price from Rs. 9,400 to Rs 80,000 in quantities of 1,000. The single-socket Intel Xeon processor 3500 series ranges from Rs. 14,200 to Rs. 50,000 in quantities of 1,000. The L5508 embedded processors for the communications market segments are priced at Rs. 26,500 and Rs. 21,150 respectively, in quantities of 1,000.
